Description

Julian Marsh is the founding partner of Marsh:Grochowski Architects LLP, a leading regional practice working in low energy architecture. He has been teaching and practising architecture for over twenty five years and during that time the practice has won 5 national RIBA Awards, 13 Regional RIBA Awards and 4 Civic Trust Awards. His work and that of the practice are published in books and journals both in the UK and Europe.

He has been an architectural advisor to The Arts Council of Wales Lottery Board, a founder member of the Architecture Centre for the East Midlands (Opun). He is currently Chair of Mozes, a community energy services company and Professor of Architecture at Sheffield Hallam University.

Julian has developed specific expertise in sustainable, low energy design; community architecture and the provision of arts facilities. He has won a number of national competitions in these areas and has been engaged in several low energy design based research projects with the University of Nottingham Institute of Sustainable Energy Technology and Nottingham Trent University. These include The ‘Eon’ House (1930’s retrofit experiment), ‘Green Street, Green Living’, ‘The Future Climate House’ (future adaptation experiment) and The RIBA EM Low Carbon Awards Scoping Study. He is responsible for the widely published low energy conversion built for the Nottingham South MP and green activist, Alan Simpson and has designed and built a number of innovative low energy houses, including his own house.

In his talk, Julian will discuss some of his projects, a naturally-ventilating theatre at Nottingham Girls' High School and three eco-houses (including his own).
